A table for your thoughts
From finding your flow to focusing on work, how have we rediscovered our space?
The sacred desk and its subjectivity
The desk. The mighty, take it or leave it, chaos consuming, imagination and productivity harnessing table top, on which all work can begin…
We ask a lot of our desks. We don’t want to feel tied down yet we also shy away from leaving our desks for too long. Trends like hot-desking and co-working have eaten away at traditional work life, not like that was a bad thing. We want our desks to be free flowing with our creativity, while wanting it to hold everything together at the same time. Desks have adapted too, take the ergonomic adjustable desk or desks on castors (hot wheels but way cooler).
The modern desk is a dependant essential, one which has survived the historic evolution of the 9 to 5 and now lives in many different forms and in many different environments. Our relationship between work and play, office and home, desk and table is perhaps interchangeable, now even more so.
Defining your workspace can be as easy as sitting down to work. But stand up, stretch your legs and find quirky places to write, to read and to make those calls. Find out more in discovering your space below…
We asked the question, what makes a desk a desk and a table a table..? Check it out here.
The humble home office
Like the family dog we might pad around our space until eventual satisfaction is established, but for some, working from home might take a while longer to settle.
A noble home office can be the epitome of stylish modern working. But a home office can range from a single office chair splattered with paint and stacked with art books, to a lavish room with neat shelves, golden desk ornaments and that single antique armchair. A student’s home office is the same place they ate beans on toast and there’s nothing wrong with that.
That’s why a space remains defined to us as individuals. Irrelevant of the type of work we do, individual desire to express our space is fundamental to inspiring productivity.

The power of the webcam
Zoom calls and Skype video conferencing has quickly become our new meeting room. Separated into small squares, a weekly team catch up is essential to keep the flow of communication.
The shift to remote work has been a large-scale adjustment for many businesses as they migrate from the normality of internal office life. Zoom has seen a consistent increase in downloads per day and is now home to millions of users worldwide.
We have gradually become hard-wired. Our face-to-face has developed into face-to-screen as our multiple screens and mini versions of entire lives are wrapped up inside a smart brick. While we honour the necessity of remote working and reliance on screens, we can’t help but be excited to return to the physicality of undiluted meetings and the weekly Thursday afternoon office beers.
It’s the little things…
While our space may have become temporarily smaller, it undoubtedly heightens our appreciation for the little things. From a perfect cup of coffee in the morning, to dedicating yourself to projects you always said you’d get round to if you had the time.
This is your space. And this is the time to make your space, your own.
