Working from home - the honest truth
The good, the bad and the honest…
The precipice of 2020 seemed like a long awaited leap from 2019, with a collection of exciting new turns for the workplace, Rawside were ready for a year of collaboration, creativity and changes across the industry.
But preparing for an unanticipated wave of cataclysm, which has sent ricochets across the modern world, has come with a multitude of unforeseen challenges.
Here at Rawside we are innovating how we can help reflect the changing tide of flexible workspace with practical products and smart solutions.
But first, let’s get honest about working from home…
Suited and booted
Not suited. And definitely not booted.
We’ve seemingly lost the reliability of routine, now forgetting which way is up, if you brushed your teeth, or if Monday really does last forever.
Working from home means it’s casual Friday everyday, owning the ‘lived in’ look is acceptable and only Zoom calls allow for some shred of decency on camera.
Is lounge wear the real problem?
Yes. Is the correct answer.
Breakdowns
From slow internet connection and fuzzy zoom calls to unexplained laptop restarts (yes the latter happened while writing this article), technical breakdowns happen in and out of the office.
We are the digital natives and website warriors of tomorrow, nearly all working professionals now rely on constant connection and multiple screens to continue their work.
So yes. technical breakdowns can and do lead to mental ones. Remember kids, throw yourself a buoyancy aid and save as you go!
What’s that coming over the hill?
Is it a time management deficit?
We all organise in different ways. Some of us like to make notes and checklists, others like to keep it all stored safely in their head. When you lapse in organisation, waiting for your head to catch up almost sounds like the
beeeeeepdeeeeeeepzghhhggggghghfchhhhhhhhhhhzzzzzzzzzz
of a 90’s computer starting up with poor modem connection - bare with me team I’ll get up to speed.
For me, using a handy planner helps to keep everything together. Check out the ‘ultimate to-do list’ by Hull creative which “simplifies the reflective process for people” and gives you the much needed Reflection.
Sitting is overrated
By now, every piece of furniture is overrated. The sofa remembers your shape so now it’s too lumpy to care. Is it possible you’ll never find home a comforting space to escape ever again?
The sofa can’t tell the difference between work and play. It’s hours of mindless social media before asking yourself, “have I completed the internet..?”
Procrastination does exist post-university, so now you’re channelling your inner student by eating beans on toast and not showering for 3 days.
Setting up a desk space might solve all these problems, or you could just sit on the sofa, again.
If you agree to the above, then our new home desk designs are made just for you.
Finally. FOMO
We miss the pub. We miss the office. It might be easy to guess which one we miss more, because nothing can replace office beers.
Fear of missing out has pried on everyone’s minds, even the virtual team drinks can’t make up for buying the rounds in, spilling a full tray of tequila shots and those eventual Friday morning hangovers.
FOMO is not some fruity swedish sweet, it’s okay to say what you miss, shout it from the rooftops if you really need to - just do it safely.
Alas! We will have the opportunity to return safely soon and banish FOMO forever.
For now, (virtual) cheers.
