Throughout this global emergency we have grouped together, becoming as resourceful as possible in our continued working effort. This has led to an increase in online connectivity, virtual meetings and phone call catch ups. Nothing quite makes up for the 10-metre commute or dressed down weekly team calls, (we can’t see anything), but many of us cherish the reliability of routine, dedicated space and face-to-face meetings.
For some, the ideals of working from home were well-received and soon accustomed to. But where does home working stop being a novelty and become a genuine loss to the office community?
As we embark on returning to an office within the ‘new normal’, that same office and it’s routine won’t be quite the same again. Pre-lockdown, flexible working had reached it’s early adolescence - many of us had already opted for flexible hours, collaborative co-working and hot desking. Adapting to that market, we followed the trends as ergonomic products and social space revitalised the formulaic office.
Space, as we once knew it, is experiencing a shift like never before. Workspace is now defined by the individual. Harnessing the benefits of a balanced home and office work life is perhaps a popular route. Smart home desks, larger tables for safe meetings and office space plans allowing social distance, are diversifying the traditional working life. Proving to us all, crashing the wall of the conventional, is making way for the new.
Yes. Loss of office community, engaging teamwork and creative collaboration are possible if we lost the office all together. Welcoming new colleagues, divided by a screen and ruled with 40-minute windows, is not the introduction we once prepared for. The physical office holds more than the company ethos, rather it’s entire core. While working remotely plays its part, anticipating the return is heralded in us all.
We now have the opportunity to return to the office we want - not the soulless formulaic office with 4 walls and no spark, but a space which is defined by its conversations and celebrations, development and breakthroughs.
We crave social interaction, space to meet, great, eat and a hub where possibility and passion evolves. The office remains an integral part of our lives, the core of creative pursuits, socialisation and collaborative productivity. It provides necessity, changing a dull room into the platform on which success is driven forward.
